Casio showcases rugged Android G-Shock smartphone

Following the rugged G’zOne Commando is yet another tough-as-nails smartphone from Casio for those who like to go out in the rough and don't want to worry about damaging their phones.

The G-Shock shock phone carries the signature design of the watches by placing all the buttons on the sides near the corners. The display is surrounded by a thick frame, which would prevent any damage even if it falls flat on a surface.
The back looks even more impressive, with a stylish metal caseback and exposed screws. Casio has even engraved some emergency numbers on the back.

As you can expect the phone comes with all kinds of '-resistant' prefixes, such as shock-resistant (10 feet), pressure-resistant (1.0 ton) and water-resistant (1.0 bar), although we wouldn't expect any less from a G-Shock phone.

Unfortunately, we don't know much regarding the hardware specifications of the device at the moment. Also, even on the software front, all we know is that it will be running Android, presumably Gingerbread. Hopefully, we will find out more about it soon.

Talk about a Dream BlackBerry... Introducing the Anastasiadis BlackBerry Concept!

Now THAT's a BlackBerry SuperPhone

I know what you're thinking... WOW. Just WOW. We've received a lot of great feedback and reader submissions following our Tell Us/Show Us What Your Dream BlackBerry Looks Like post this week, and while I was planning on waiting until next week to start posting some of the sketches and renders up on the blogs, I just had to get this one up asap.

Submitted by BlackBerry fan (and Industrial Designer w/ an MBA) John Anastasiadis, John's BlackBerry Concept is absolutely stunning. Here are the key specs/aspects of the phone as John sees them:

  • Wrap around screen. This allows you to incorporate soft-keys on the underside for gaming, navigation, etc.
  • The asymmetrical shape allows you to know the orientation of the phone (while holding) without having to look at it.
  • There is one hard button that serves multiple functions (screen lock, picture taking, etc.)
  • The phone has some artificial intelligence that can predict if you intended a command. For example, sometimes while using an iPhone it will slip out of my hand, causing me to grab for it any which way I can, thus hitting all sorts of buttons on the screen.
  • The front and back cameras are behind the screen. The screen will illuminate to act as the flash.

What's really kind of crazy and as John pointed out to us, is that this isn't truly a DreamBerry... the technology to build a phone with these sort of features already exists. I'm not sure about you guys, but I wantz one NAO!!

So what do you think CrackBerry Nation? Hot or HAWWWTTT?! Stay tuned for more DreamBerry renders and be sure to sound off in the comments with your reactions. And to see more of John's creations, you can jump over to his portfolio here. Thanks for the submission John... awesome stuff!

Top 10 Android Market apps that work on a jailbroken BlackBerry Playbook

BlackBerry PlayBook running Android apps

After struggling with previous versions of the Dingleberry jailbreak, I'm happy to say that version 3 works like a freakin' charm. It bundles a downgrader, so you can get your PlayBook into a prime jailbreaking state, and Dingleberry handles all of the backing up and restoring on its own. So, what can you do with root access on a BlackBerry PlayBook? Well, there's some neat stuff going on with USB host capabilities, but the most obvious application right now is direct access to the Android Market. Sure, you can sideload the apps if you acquire them through less-than-savory means, but Android Market access means you can easily download anything you've already paid - provided it works.

There's a teeny, tiny caveat, though. PlayBook 2.0 is still very much beta, and seeing as RIM isn't even intending on providing access to the Android Market, opting instead to get developers to repackage their creations for App World. Notifications actually work well in the few apps that manage to load, but for the most part, anytyhing downloaded through Google's mobile software portal perform inconsistently at best. Generally, anything you get will simply force close as soon as you open it, but there are a few gems tucked away that perform admirably. That said, here are the best Android Market apps I've been able to run on a jailbroken BlackBerry PlayBook.

Porsche Design BlackBerry P9981 strolls through the FCC, shows off internals and more

Porsche 9981 FCC

The Porsche Designed BlackBerry P9981 is no secret, it is for sale in Dubai, we have gone hands-on with it, and we don't even want to know the things our very own CrackBerry Kevin would do to get one for himself. We have seen the outside of the device plenty but what we have yet to see was what it was packing on the inside, and a recent filing to the FCC was able to show us just that. While it sure isn't anything like an iFixIt teardown it does still show us what exactly is running in the device -- spoiler, not much different than what you would expect -- but we all know the nerd in you is loving this. Be sure to hit the links below for more images, and the full FCC filing.

Apple Dreaming Up Wearable Computers That Talk to iPhone and Use Siri

With the iPhone 4S, Apple has made a breakthrough in consumer artificial intelligence with their virtual assistant, Siri. Apple is planning to use this, along with the iPod Nano wrist watch, to make wearable computing devices.
The New York Times has revealed some of Apple’s plans for wearable devices. They have been working on Siri-controlled devices, which will relay information back to the iPhone:
Apple has also experimented with prototype products that could relay information back to the iPhone. These conceptual products could also display information on other Apple devices, like an iPod, which Apple is already encouraging us to wear on our wrists by selling Nanos with watch faces.
One idea being discussed is a curved-glass iPod that would wrap around the wrist; people could communicate with the device using Siri, the company’s artificial intelligence software.
According to the report, Google is also working on the same technology too.

Prepare Your iPhone 4S / iPad 2 For The 5.0.1 Untethered Jailbreak

Everyone interested in jailbreaking their iPhone 4S or iPad 2 should make sure to be ready for when the tools are released. If Apple decides to stop signing 5.0.1 and you are not on firmware 5.0.1 you will be out of luck. Apple does this when a new version is released, and withe 5.1 around the corner it could be any time. Over the air updates are extremely simple now as they will not delete data, will not require iTunes, and only download a fraction of the iPSW file size. If you would like further insurance save your SHSH blobs once on 5.o.1. You can do that using TinyUmbrella or with various other tools. You can accesses over the air updates on your device in Settings > General > Software Update. Update now and you should be good.

Intel's Medfield series processor debuts on the Lenovo K800

Intel has been trying to get into the smartphone segment for a long time now but they have finally managed to do it with the Lenovo K800, which will be the first smartphone to hit the market running on Intel's 32nm Medfield platform.

The K800 is running on the Penwell SoC that has a 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z2460 CPU with 512KB L2 cache. On the GPU side it has the tried and tested PowerVR SGX 540 which has been clocked at a slightly higher than usual 400MHz and dual-channel LPDDR2 memory. The CPU in Penwell is only a single-core right now but Intel plans to come up with dual-core versions later, along with a faster GPU.

So how does this new chip perform? Quite well, actually. Despite the single-core CPU and the fact that the K800 was running on Gingerbread, the Intel chip managed to race past phones like the Galaxy Nexus running ICS and the iPhone 4S in the browser benchmarks. GPU benchmarks, admittedly, weren't as impressive, although it is powerful enough to decode and encode 1080p30 video.

But what about power consumption, you ask? Luckily, Intel has taken care of that as well. Compared to phones like the iPhone 4S, Galaxy S II, HTC Sensation and the LG Optimus 2x, the Intel reference handset managed to consume the least amount of power in certain tasks while being significantly lower in some of the others.

It is important to note, however, that despite the impressive CPU performance and lower power consumption, the Medfield processor is up against rivals that came out last year and are soon to be upgraded. It remains to be seen how well it stacks up against the Cortex A15 and the Qualcomm Krait when they release later this year.
Intel has managed to partner with two companies for now, one of which is Lenovo and the other is Motorola. Lenovo plans to launch the K800 in China by Q2 this year although the Motorola smartphones and tablets running Medfield will only arrive by the end of this year.

16 MP Kodak Polaroid Android HD smartphone does optical zoom

Hey, look - it's Big Foot! No, it's just the Altek Leo, a creature that appears occasionally, the local newspaper writes about it and then disappears for another year. This time there's a big name attached to it at least, so maybe this time it will get a proper market release. Meet the Kodak Polaroid SC1630 Android HD Smart Camera.
Styled like an old school camera, the Polaroid SC1630's crowning feature is a 16MP camera unit (was 14MP when we last saw the Leo), with 3x optical zoom, F3.1-F5.6 aperture, ISO up to 3200 and shutter speeds of up to 1/1400. There's a xenon flash to go with it too. The SC1630 can shoot 720p videos.

Kodak Polaroid SC1630 Android HD Smart Camera
On the phone side of things, there's quad-band GSM and tri-band 3G connectivity, microSIM card, a 3.2" WVGA screen, Android OS (not sure which version) and a 2.5mm audio jack (huh?). The phone is rather thick at 18.5mm, but if you look at it as a point-and-shoot camera it's actually quite compact.
The battery is reportedly just 1020mAh, which is insufficient for all the mechanical zoom and xenon flash goodies, so we hope it will be replaced by the time the Kodak Polaroid SC1630 hits the shelves.
Kodak's contribution to the project comes in the form of their proprietary compression technology, which allows the user to tweak the size of photos.
The Polaroid Android HD will reportedly cost $299 when it hits the shelves in April, but Kodak is still in talks with carriers so it's unclear who will carry it. They are also considering offering the phone pre-paid

Liquidpel Coating Waterproofs Your iPhone Without a Case

There are a bunch of gadgets at CES this year, but one that particularly caught our eye was a new technology called Liquidpel, which is an invisible coating that totally waterproofs your iPhone. You won’t ever have to worry about dropping it in the toilet again!
This service (no, you can’t do it yourself) costs $59 as of now, but if you want to enable it you’ll have to ship out your iPhone so the Liquidpel can be applied. Within just 2 days, however, your device will be back in your hands, and totally waterproof.
While this may seem like a great service, you may also want to take some caution before rushing to get your iPhone coated. The Liquidpel is said to be an internal coating, meaning that your device will almost certainly have to be disassembled, which could possibly void the warranty. So if that is something you are worried about, it would probably be a good idea to hold off on Liquidpel for now.

SlideScreen LS UPDATED

I don't typically post LS Themes to this forum but seeing what this can do for all future lockscreens I want to get it into as many people's hands as possible. It is the Miui lockscreen with previews.

To use:

  1. download the zip file to your computer and extract it (do not download straight to your phone and try to apply it).
  2. Open the manifest file located in the lockscreen>advanced folder. Search for gmail.com and replace YOURNAME@gmail.com with your gmail account (2 instances).
  3. Open the .mtz file in the base folder with 7zip.
  4. Move the lockscreen folder into the mtz.
  5. Move the mtz to you sd card and apply.
  6. The theme manager will ask if you want to convert, click yes.
If the names for SMS are not working, you must delete your sms threads (long press each thread then delete) then go to your contacts app and press Menu > Settings > Rebuild index data and OK. Then you just have to wait for a message.

Things left to fix:
  • When an unknown caller or sms return with null. Hopefully, I can fix this when the DINC gets its update.
  • GMail notification number is the number of items in your inbox not unread messages. Me and Andy Thomson (the guy that brings you extended settings) are working hard to fix this.http://gadgetdesire.blogspot.com/201...screen-ls.html
Notes:
  • Despite the preview above the GMail has been fixed so that the real name/address is shown without the extra characters.
  • Calendar events do not show allday events. To change this go to the manafest file and delete allDay=0 AND from the content provider binder.
  • The calendar also does not show reoccurring events for which the first event has already occurred. This is because of the coding in google calendar.
  • The start time for the event is the start time for the first instance and is set to repeat. Therefore the start time would always be in the past. There is no known way around this at this time. I believe the only way it can be fixed is if the data was based on the API and not the content provider.
  • Miui notes. I hope to replace this with a RSS feed however, to my knowledge none of them use a content provider.
  • Music autoshows when a song is played. Only shows music information for Miui Music (this is not my doing and it is not possible to show others).
  • To make the lockscreen show degrees in Celsius. Open the genie widget and change the weather settings to using metric. If you need the C after the degree character open the manifest file and search for format="%d°F" and replace with format="%d°C". There are 3 instances of this.
  • Finally, if you want a 24-hour clock, open the manifest file and replace hh:mm with HH:mm. There are 3 instances of this.

The next Sony Ericsson Xperia teased, could it be the Arc S

Today we got the third teaser about the upcoming new Xperia phone. It will be announced on CES in Las Vegas in a few days.
Unfortunately, all three teases show a device awfully similar with the arc/arc S rather than highly awaited arc HD, codenamed Nozomi. We already met the Nozomi/arc HD and it looks nothing like the previous Xperia arc phones.
Here are the three teasers so far, so you can see for yourselves.

The new Xperia teasers
And here is the Xperia Nozomi a.k.a. arc HD.
Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc HDSony Ericsson Xperia Arc HDSony Ericsson Xperia Arc HDSony Ericsson Xperia Arc HD
Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc HD a.k.a. Sony Ericsson Nozomi live shots
So, we could be wrong but it seems to us Sony Ericsson is preparing to announce the US version of the arc S, rather than the dual-core arc HD. If this scenario really happens, the arc HD will be most probably unveiled on the upcoming MWC in Barcelona.
Anyway, these are all just some teasers and they can mean literally anything. At least we won't have to wait much longer before we learn the truth.

Is Apple planning to soon ship iPhones with quad-core chips?

Some reliable people have discovered quad-core processor support into the iOS 5.1 beta code. So, we could expect quad-core iPhones and iPads in the near future.
Shocker? Of course not. But it’s good to know Apple is already working on the next big hardware jump.

core.0 means single-core, core.3 means quad-core

A few months ago other skilful developers discovered the iPhone5,1 reference into the first iOS 5.1 beta code. It might turn out Apple is indeed gearing the next iPhone with a quad-core A6 chip.
So, what do you think - will the next iPhone be a quad-core gadget or Apple will stick to the dual-core technology for one more generation?

White Galaxy Nexus image surfaces, not as white as expected

The news that Samsung has almost completed the development of the white Galaxy Nexus broke yesterday, but we only get the first actual photos of the smartphone now.
As it turns out the white Galaxy Nexus won't be completely repainted (as was our yesterday's mockup) and its front panel will remain black. The back and the sides is where all the whitening action happened with the camera module ending up silver rather than snow-white.

Leaving the image aside, there's not much new information about the white version. It's still expected to come in the first days of February (February 6 is the most frequently mentioned date) and cost as much as its black sibling (which is actually gray if we have to be pedantic).

White Galaxy Nexus coming up next month, 32GB version in tow

Samsung blessed most of its smartphone portfolio with shiny white dresses for the holiday season, but it seemed to have forgotten about its most important product. Well, rest assured - the Galaxy Nexus is getting the same treatment soon.
According to some UK retailers the white Galaxy Nexus units should start arriving sometime next month. Dates vary, but are generally in the first two weeks of the month. Pricing for the white version is identical to that of its black sibling.
Pre-orders for the 32GB version of the Galaxy Nexus also started, but there is no exact launch date for that one yet. Its £599.99 price tag sure sounds scary, but given that there's no microSD card slot on that one, this is your only option of getting a bit of extra space for all those apps and multimedia files.
So, are you getting a white Samsung Galaxy Nexus? Or did you just start saving for the extra storage version? Share with us in the comments section below.

New Windows Phone update fixes disappearing keyboard and more

Italian Windows Phone site Plaffo, have confirmed reports that a new update for Windows Phone has begun to roll out, starting with the LG Optimus 7 on Vodafone.
The update issues a number of improvements and more importantly bug fixes to Windows Phone, addressing the likes of the mysterious disappearing keyboard issue that has plagued users by hiding the on-screen keyboard in general use.

There are also more security centric fixes too, such as the location privacy issue that Microsoft said caused "unintended behavior" by sending excess location data relative to nearby cell towers and WiFi access points.
The update uses the version number to 7.10.8107.79 and the key points of the change log are as follows:
• Stops the on-screen keyboard disappearing when in use
• Provides a fix for Gmail sync issue
• Fixes location access issue. Following the upgrade, sending location information anonymously to Microsoft regarding nearby Wi-Fi access points and cell antennas is optional
•Revocation of certificates issued by DigiCert Sdn Bhd to solve a problem of encryption
• Fixes a problem with e-mail related to Microsoft Exchange Server 2003. When you reply to or forward an email, the original message is now included in the response
• Fixes an issue with voicemail notifications
We still don't have a rundown of the full update schedule for other devices and the various carriers, but keep checking back here and on your Windows Phone device to pick it up soon.
Win Rumours' Tom Warren does however confirm that despite the number of welcome fixes the update brings, the major SMS bug that can cripple the messaging hub from receiving SMS is still present, so with that we hope a resolution can be found soon.
Let us know if your Windows Phone has shown signs of available updates.

The iPhone 4S comes to 22 new markets, January 13th

On January 13th, the iPhone 4S will touch down in a number of new markets including the likes of China, Jamaica and Kenya along with 19 others, across the globe.

Apple's CEO Tim Cook has a lot to smile about, especially with a yet untapped market like China (with regards to the iPhone 4S at least). Tim states that,
“Customer response to our products in China has been off the charts. With the launch in China next week, iPhone 4S will be available in over 90 countries making this our fastest iPhone rollout ever.”
What's more, Chinese New Year hits on January 23rd with sales events not too dissimilar to that of the US's Black Friday. As such, Apple can expect very healthy figures once the shoppers hit the stores in coming weeks.
Here's the full list of new markets about to receive the iPhone 4S from Apple's official press release:
Beginning Friday, January 13, iPhone 4S will be available in Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bolivia, Botswana, British Virgin Islands, Cameroon, Cayman Islands, Central African Republic, China, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Grenada, Guam, Guinea Conakry, Ivory Coast, Jamaica, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritius, Niger, Senegal, St. Vincent and The Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos and Uganda.

Posted by Blackberry Themes

Posted by Blackberry Themes

Posted by Blackberry Themes

Posted by Blackberry Themes

Posted by Blackberry Themes

Posted by Blackberry Themes

Posted by Blackberry Themes

Posted by Blackberry Themes

Posted by Blackberry Themes

Posted by Blackberry Themes

Posted by Blackberry Themes

Posted by Blackberry Themes
